9 Tips for Getting the Best Results from Your Microneedling Session

If you’ve already booked a microneedling appointment, you likely don’t need convincing about the benefits of this procedure. But as you anticipate your upcoming session, you might wonder if you’ll get the results you want.

Fortunately, you can take steps to maximize the effects of your treatment. Here are nine ways to get the most out of microneedling:

1. Talk to Your Skincare Provider

Be upfront with your aesthetician about your skin’s condition and any issues you want to address or improve. Microneedling uses tiny needles to create holes in your skin, making it more susceptible to pathogens. Therefore, if you’re taking medicines for a skin condition, finish them first. If you have a cold sore or herpes, you’ll need to take an antiviral drug before you can undergo microneedling.

2. Avoid Other Products or Procedures

We strongly discourage applying certain products or undergoing skincare treatments within five days of your microneedling appointment. Your provider will likely tell you to discontinue any topical drugs and self-tanning products.

3. Exfoliate Beforehand

Exfoliating two or three days before your appointment is okay to refresh your skin. However, don’t do it the night before, as this could make your skin extra sensitive and more prone to damage.

4. Avoid Hair Removal Products

At least a week before microneedling, don’t use hair removal products or get any such procedures. Also, shaving the area close to your treatment date could lead to unnecessary irritation.

5. Use Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen regularly is always a healthy habit, and it can help you get more out of your microneedling session. On the contrary, a sunburn is a reason to postpone your treatment. Play it safe and stay out of the sun two weeks beforehand.

6. Leave Your Skin Bare When You Arrive

Applying skincare products the morning of your treatment is not a good idea, as this will interfere with the procedure’s effectiveness. However, we encourage you to wash your face with a gentle cleanser and remove all residual makeup.

7. Prevent Excessive Sweating Afterwards

Sweating can hinder the effects of microneedling if it occurs within 24 to 48 hours afterward. Play it safe and avoid strenuous exercise during this time. Also, stay out of hot showers, the sauna, or any steamy environment if possible.

8. Take Painkillers for Soreness

Although microneedling is relatively comfortable and painless, you may be sore afterward. It’s okay to take a painkiller or analgesic. Avoid anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen, and don’t take any blood-thinning medications. Another thing to avoid is applying ice to your face because you don’t want to interfere with your body’s inflammatory responses.

9. Stick with Gentle Cleansers

Post-treatment care can include rinsing your face, even when you feel dryness, sensitivity, tightness, or inflammation. Use cold water and a gentle cleanser at least four hours after microneedling. Pat dry—don’t rub—with a clean towel.
